Money and Envelope Stuffing

The So-Called Envelope Stuffing

Saving moneyLook through the newspapers or employment websites and you are sure to find a number of offers asking you to stuff envelopes and make money. People have been falling for this advertisement for many years now. It may be possible to make money from doing this, but many people lose money instead. You can save money by this process as well? This may be a new concept to some people, as they tend to think they must have more money, rather than hold on to what they do have. Following these tips could help you form good habits over time.

I Do Not Have Enough Money

Many people are in debt due to a lack of savings, and if you ask them why they do not have any savings, the most likely answer you will get is “I do not make enough money to save”. This may be true for those who do not make enough money to pay the basic bills, but those who make a lot more still have mountains of debt. There may be a reason for this, but what? The answer is obvious because they do not have a plan to manage expenses in a proper way and save money. It can be easy to save money if you stuff envelopes. Once you do this for a while, it could become a habit.

Just a Habit

Before you get started, you will need some envelopes and a pen or pencil. Once you are paid for the month, do not deposit your money in your account. After getting to the bank, cash out your check rather than depositing it. When you get back home, create a budget for the month. Keep aside the required amount of money in envelopes, for all expenses that are on your budget. A budget of 500 dollars can go into one envelope. Place the rent into another one, and so forth. Each envelope should have the budgeted expense listed on it, with the money stuffed into each. If you are being paid bi-weekly, divide your payments into two when you stuff the envelopes. You are now well prepared to start saving your money.

Using Money Wisely

Once you have stuffed the envelopes based on estimates of expenses, be prepared for your actual expenses differing slightly from your estimates. When you open an envelope for any expense, make sure that you have made a note of the actual expense on the envelope. When the money in the envelope decreases, you get a great idea of how much you have still. Once you start putting money from one envelope to another, your entire purpose will be defeated. Just because one envelope no longer has any money in it, this does not mean you can take out money from any other envelope for the same expenses. Rents and utilities are not estimates by any means, and will empty your envelopes from the start. Once you are paid again, deposit any leftover money you may have from your envelopes. Withdrawal of the money that was saved is not allowed but you can withdraw your paycheck. Even saving a little money can become a habit if you do it all the time. Consistent use of your debit or credit card will not let you see where your money is going, but this will help you in a more concrete way. Get ready on your way to accumulate some savings in your account if you continue with this habit over a period of time.
